Northeast High student podcast covers concerns with agriculture
GOOSE LAKE - A group of Northeast High School students is getting involved in the agriculture world in a big way.

Senior Taylor Flemming and juniors Amber Friedrchsen, Nathanial Lange, and Wyatt Shockey have spent the past few months designing and marketing their own ag podcast series, "Current Ag Concerns."

The podcast series, which focuses on topics in the livestock industry, brings the students together with professionals from across Iowa and beyond.

Students have had the opportunity to work with Iowa Cattlemen's CEO Matt Deppe, local USDA representative Darin Doerscher, and many others.

The first podcast with Deppe can be found on the program's website, www.currentagconcerns.com.

Students plan to release a new episode every two weeks that looks at both traditional and non-traditional livestock programs.

Members of the team traveled to Ankeny at the end of September to work with Iowa Public Television's Delany Howell.

Howell produces her own podcast, "Ag News Daily," and featured Friedrichsen and Lange on her show.

Students also will work with other local radio programs, including "The Big Show" on AM 600 and KROS AM 1340.

The students plan to travel to Denver in January to participate in the International Livestock Forum, a livestock conference hosted each year by Colorado State University.

The conference runs in conjunction with the Denver National Western Livestock Show, the largest livestock show in North America.

Flemming said the goal was to "gain more knowledge about agriculture, and all the opportunities available within the livestock industry."

Adviser Jenna Stevens said she hoped to expose students to experiences outside the classroom.

She also wants to help them to develop strong communication skills to use in college and beyond.
