|Organizers need people to offer time, food for feast|
By Kate Howes
The last time she helped to organize DeWitt's annual community Thanksgiving dinner, Red O'Toole figured it was, ... well, the last time.
But she always enjoys attending the event each year, visiting with community members and sitting down to a delicious meal lovingly prepared - and served - by local volunteers.
So, when long-time organizers Fred and Elvira Donovan asked whether she could help get plans for this year's feast rolling while they were out of town, O'Toole agreed.
"I said, I'll do my best," she recalled with a smile.
O'Toole, 75, coordinated the dinner with her husband, Mick, for several years, before they turned it over to the Donovans.
This year, however, Fred and Elvira will be out of town until Nov. 17.
So, together with the DeWitt Referral Center, O'Toole is helping to line up food to serve and volunteers to work.
The dinner will begin at noon Thursday, Nov. 23, in DeWitt Community Center.
Anyone who would like to donate food or their time may call O'Toole at 563-659-5764, or the Donovans - after Nov. 17 - at 563-659-9894.
Everyone is welcome, and people can make reservations by calling the Referral Center at 563-659-9612.
Carry-out orders and deliveries will be available.
Calling all turkeys
O'Toole said the goal is to get 13 turkeys, and already a few people have offered to donate and cook them.
But still need more are needed, along with side dishes, pies, and volunteers to help serve, clean up, and assist with carry-out orders and deliveries.
"We're not going to turn anyone away," O'Toole said. "There's always jobs for people to do, so whatever help we can get, we'll take it."
Fred said the dinner was always a come-one, come-all event.
"If you're by yourself, or you've got a group, it doesn't matter," he said. "Come on up, and rub elbows with your fellow DeWittians."
O'Toole said she looked forward to going to the dinner, and she encouraged those who have yet to attend to try it.
It's an ideal combination of good food and fellowship.
"You just get together and enjoy the day," she said. "You get to visit with different people, and you've got someone to do the cooking and the cleaning up for you. What more could you ask for?"
