Library plans to establish work timeline for expansion
Public asks board for calendar with targets for phases of project

By Tom Pantera

The next step in refurbishing and expanding DeWitt's library is to nail down just how long it will take.

Jillian Aschliman, director of Frances Banta Waggoner Community Library, said the need for a project timeline was a result of the Nov. 1 meeting between the Library Board and local citizens interested in the project.

That timeline was the focus of much of the discussion at Monday's regular meeting of the Library Board.

"The timeline is the big thing people are asking for, and we have to formulate one," Aschliman said.

Board members also discussed a scheduled meeting with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, which is helping local officials with the project.

Aschliman said the foundation would help the DeWitt Library Board with some marketing tools and with creating the timeline.

Also on Monday, the board discussed the timing of a public vote on a bond sale that would pay for part of the project.

Members didn't decide on a date, Aschliman said, but they are closing in on one after receiving a list of options.

"We're thinking either the later summer one or the one in November," she said. The actual setting of a date will have to wait for the timeline.

"We're just trying to figure out what's best for us and the rest of the community," she said.

The library expansion project is expected to cost $5.7 million, with $3.5 million of that coming from a bond issue.
