Wheatland Betterment slates 'Christmas Around the World' Dec. 9
Members of the Wheatland Betterment Committee are having a soup and sandwich supper Sunday, Dec. 9, 4-7 p.m., at Wheatland Community Hall.

There is no charge for the event, but good-will offerings will be appreciated and will help benefit Wheatland Community Hall.

In addition to the supper, entertainment will be provided, including preschoolers singing at 4:15, followed by a Barber Shop Quartet, Rita Hart on the piano, JoAnn Horstmann on the guitar and performances by the Calamus-Wheatland school bands and choir.

At around 5:45, the story "Mickey's Night Before Christmas" will be read aloud.

Santa is set to arrive at 6 p.m., and children may write and mail their Christmas wish lists at the North Pole Post Office.

There also will be make-it-and-take-it craft tables, a raffle drawing at 6:45, a cookie sale and trees decorated by local businesses will be displayed.

All proceeds from the raffle will go to purchase new welcome flags and Christmas lights for Main Street.

A food and toy drive also will be held. Visitors are asked to bring three non-perishable food items or a new, unwrapped toy for the Carroll Assistance Center. Individuals who bring items will receive a free raffle ticket for a Kindle Fire E-Reader.

Lighting contest will be held

Also on Sunday, free roasted peanuts will be provided by the American Legion and guests are encouraged to bring blankets and take a hayrack ride to take in the holiday lights in Wheatland.

A lighting contest will be held and persons may vote for their favorite decorated home or business. Registration for the contest is not necessary; interested persons need only have their lights and displays turned on Saturday, Dec. 8 for judging.

The first-place winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Wheatland Grocery, second place will receive a $10 gift certificate and third place will win a turkey.

Anyone who would like to help with the event, donate cookies, provide entertainment or has any questions may contact Cristal Kastantin at 563-374-1619, Rose Boedeker at 563-579-1227 or Bonnie Gorsh (for cookie donations) at 563-570-0779.
