Donald Eugene Simmons
Donald Eugene Simmons, 86, of DeWitt, went home to the Lord on Friday Nov. 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 24, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). A visitation will occur two hours prior to the funeral service Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.

Don was born Jan. 27, 1931, the son of Hazel and George Simmons. Don served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska in the early 1950s, learning his future truck-driving trade. Following his service, he started his truck-driving career, and retired from Determann Industry in the 1990s. Don, not well suited for retirement, began driving a truck again for Dwayne Johnson Trucking until he was 79 years of age.

Don was united in marriage to Joyce Berner on Dec. 15, 1973. They have been each other's soulmates, rock, and best friends ever since.

Don cherished his time spent with his children, grandchildren, and he glowed with joy when spending time with his great-grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife Joyce; six children, Donette Valley, Scott Simmons, Rhonda Smith, Dean (Michelle) Pingel, Karla (Jerry) Anderson, Brenda Hook, and his very special puppy, Muffy; nine grandchildren, Brent (Monica) Smith, Matthew (Kelli) Smith, Jeremy (Whitney) Anderson, Jason (April) Anderson, Steven (Kayleigh) Pingel, Jessica (Ryan) Brandon, Jimmy Valley, Tyler Hook, and Marcus Hook.

Preceding Donald in death were his parents; a son, Terry; a son in-law, Roger; a daughter-in-law, Narda Pingel; two sisters; and four brothers.

Memorials can be directed to the wishes of the family.

Fond memories and condolences for Don's family may be shared at lemkefuneralhomes.com, obituary page.
