Nothing was going to keep the Central DeWitt baseball team from an impressive doubleheader sweep of No. 7 Solon.
Not even a little extra work.
Still tied at two after the normal seven innings, the Sabers and Spartans kept playing in the nightcap of their twin bill.
Finally, Central broke through in the bottom of the 11th inning, using a double by Jared Haack and two key Solon errors to push across the winning run in a 3-2 victory that completed the sweep.
Haack doubled to right field with one out before Devin Hurdle reached on an error.
Solon got the second out of the inning, but McGwire Eden was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Garrett Finley's grounder was misplayed by the second baseman, which allowed Haack to score the winning run.
Finley had given Central an early lead when his double in the bottom of the third scored Eden and Cam Steffens.
Solon, however, matched Central's two runs in the fourth.
The two teams then traded zeroes the rest of the way until the Sabers walked off.
Senior Brad Gannon pitched the first seven innings, spreading out six hits and striking out eight Spartans. Finley handled the next three innings, and Eden pitched the 11th to pick up the win. The three pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
Eden also had three of Central's eight hits, and Finley added two to go with his two RBIs.
A big fourth inning in game one had put the Sabers in position to sweep.
Trailing 2-0, the Sabers pounded out five hits and batted through their order in the inning, resulting in six runs.
Central was not done, adding five more runs in the fifth and a 12th run in the sixth to end the game early.
Finley set the tone in the fourth with a leadoff double. He scored a batter later on a single by Austin Weiss.
Joel Kirby, Gannon, Haack, and Eden also added singles in the fourth, and Central led 6-2.
The lead continued to grow. The Sabers loaded the bases in the fifth inning and all three runners scored. Steffens drove in a fourth run with a double before he scored on Eden's single, which pushed the lead to nine.
Weiss led off the sixth inning with the team's third double, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Lucas Bixby's single to clinch the 10-run victory.
Weiss had a team-high three hits, while six other players - Steffens, Eden, Bixby, Kirby, Gannon, and Haack - added two hits each for the Sabers, who finished with 16 hits as a team.
Alex McAleer earned the win, keeping Solon off the scoreboard after a two-run first inning. Jake Swanson continued the run of scoreless frames in the sixth.
