Sabers topple Rebels 3-1 in postseason preview

Monday's encounter between the Central and Northeast girls soccer teams turned out to be more than a typical Observer-area battle.

That was because the game also acted as a sneak preview of things to come after the recent revelation that the Sabers and Rebels would open the postseason against each other.

Both teams will come into the match-up with confidence, especially the Sabers who left Goose Lake with a 3-1 victory.

The Rebels, though, made their visitors work for every goal and had chances of their own in the game.

The game was a back-and-forth affair early with both squads making runs down the field.

Neither team was able to convert on their chances, though, until the Sabers pulled in front on a long shot by senior Erica Laures that sailed just over the outstretched arms of Rebel goalkeeper Victoria Kuznetsova.

The lead did not last very long thanks to an aggressive Rebel surge immediately after the goal.

Northeast pushed the ball into the Saber zone and Breanne Butler fired a shot. The ball was ricocheted before it reached the goal, but also deflected right to senior Shelby Bormann, who buried a shot to knot things up at 1-1.

Both squads looked to break the tie and it was the Sabers who accomplished the feat late in the half as Central was awarded a free kick thanks to a hand ball.

Sophomore Erin Lane lined up to take the kick and blasted a shot that arced and found the corner of the Rebel goal to make it 2-1.

That proved to be the final score of the first half and the two teams went into the break with Central up 2-1.

The Sabers controlled possession for much of the final 40 minutes of play and turned that advantage into an insurance goal, as midfielder Kayla Lancaster found the back of the net for her first score of the season.

The 3-1 margin held the rest of the way to give Central its sixth win of the season.

Laures and Allison Keitel both had four shots in the game for Central with Maggie Grell adding three and five Sabers - Abbey Grau, Lancaster, Emily McAleer, Marci Nielsen and Kayla Wagner - notching two apiece.

Brooke Chapman led the Sabers with five saves, while Abby Johnson kept the Rebels off the scoreboard during her time in net.

Along with recording Northeast's lone goal, Bormann also led the team with seven shots, including five on goal. Butler also had five shots on goal and six total.

Senior Alyssa Anderson had five shots with three on goal, while Kayla Ohrt and Cara Soenksen both had three shots.

Kuznetsova had a busy day in goal for the Rebels with 21 saves - her second game this season with more than 20 saves.
